As you gear up for the return to school and begin thinking about lesson plans that will excite the students after returning from being away, consider adding Pets Add Life Children’s Poetry Contest to your arsenal of ideas!

The Pets Add Life Children’s Poetry Contest is open to third through eighth grade students and simply asks the students to write an original poem about a pet or pets.  One student per grade level will be selected to receive a $250 gift card and a byline in a national publication or online outlet.  And here’s the fun part for you, the teacher…the winning students’ classrooms will also receive a prize…$1000 to be used toward pet-related education (a visit to the zoo or local animal shelter, books, your classroom pet, etc.)!

The deadline for the contest is January 31, 2014, so help your students get those creative juices flowing!  Some ideas to get them started include:  writing about the classroom pet, their own pet, how much they love their pet, specific joys that their pet brings them, why they have a pet, how the pet has changed their lives,  the pet’s daily life, etc.  Poems should not be longer than 100 words.
